Kotitalousvähennys 2026 — Complete Guide for Cleaning Services

Updated for tax year 2026. Figures verified against vero.fi.

Kotitalousvähennys is a household tax credit that lets Finnish residents deduct part of the labour cost of services bought into their home — including cleaning. If a private household hires Prime Cleaning Services for home cleaning, move-in/out cleaning, or one-time deep cleaning, the work qualifies. This guide walks through the 2026 rules, the math, and how to actually claim the deduction.

Note: business-paid cleaning (office cleaning, commercial premises) is not covered. Kotitalousvähennys is a personal tax credit, not a business deduction.

2026 figures at a glance

Deduction rate35 % of labour cost
Maximum per person per year1 600 €
Annual threshold (omavastuu)150 € per person
Joint household max (2 adults)3 200 € (claim split between partners)
Applies toLabour cost only, not materials or travel

The 60 % rate you may see in older articles was a temporary boost from 2022–2024 for energy-saving work and ordinary household work. It has expired. The 2026 rate for cleaning is 35 %.

What qualifies

  • Regular home cleaning — weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly
  • One-time deep cleaning (kertasiivous) — before a party, post-renovation, seasonal
  • Move-in and move-out cleaning (muuttosiivous) — handover between tenants
  • Household maintenance and renovation — not covered in this guide, different rules

The work must be done in your primary residence or a second home you personally use. Rental properties you own but don’t live in do not qualify. The service provider must be a registered company with a valid Y-tunnus (for Prime Cleaning: 2486114-7) and be in the ennakkoperintärekisteri (Prepayment Register) — both are easy to verify at ytj.fi.

How the math works — three scenarios

Scenario 1: Regular bi-weekly customer

Prime Cleaning visits every second week for 3 hours, all year.

  • 26 visits × 3 h = 78 hours
  • 78 h × 32 €/h = 2 496 € labour
  • 35 % deduction = 873,60 €
  • Minus 150 € threshold = 723,60 € actual tax credit for the year

Scenario 2: One-time deep clean

A 6-hour deep clean before the holidays.

  • 6 h × 32 €/h = 192 € labour
  • 35 % deduction = 67,20 €
  • After 150 € threshold = 0 € credit (the threshold wipes out a small one-off)

Lesson: the 150 € threshold hits once per person per year. Book the deep clean alongside any other qualifying work and the threshold is already cleared.

Scenario 3: Couple, combined household work

A two-adult household with 4 hours of cleaning weekly plus one 6-hour deep clean in spring.

  • 52 weeks × 4 h + 6 h = 214 hours × 32 € = 6 848 € labour
  • 35 % deduction = 2 396,80 €
  • Split between two adults: 1 198,40 € each (well under the 1 600 € cap)
  • Minus 150 € threshold × 2 = 300 € total
  • Combined credit: 2 096,80 €

How to claim the deduction

  1. Get a proper invoice from the service provider. It must show: company name, Y-tunnus, VAT breakdown, labour hours, labour cost separate from materials, dates of service, and your address. Prime Cleaning invoices include all of this automatically.
  2. Log into OmaVero (vero.fi/omavero) during the tax year or at tax filing time.
  3. Add the deduction under “Tax credit for household expenses”. Enter the labour cost (not the full invoice total).
  4. Keep the invoice. Verohallinto can ask for it later — keep invoices for 6 years.
  5. Receive the credit as a tax refund or a reduction in withholding tax for the year.

Common mistakes

  • Claiming the full invoice instead of just the labour portion. Materials and travel costs are not deductible.
  • Expecting the old 60 % rate. That temporary rate ended in 2024. Current rate is 35 %.
  • Missing the 150 € threshold math. A single small job often produces no credit on its own.
  • Paying an unregistered cleaner. If the worker isn’t in the Prepayment Register or doesn’t have a Y-tunnus, no deduction.
  • Claiming on a rental property you don’t live in. Must be your own residence.
